CTE CIP Codes
Classification of Instructional Program (CIP) codes are used to characterize CTE program types. These codes have been developed by the U.S. Department of Education’s National Center for Educational Statistics and are organized by the National Career Clusters Framework. When applying for CTE program approval, a CIP code is assigned. The following specific CIP codes, the same subset found on the vendor web page, should be used. NYSED-approved CTE programs use the CIP code found on the NYSED-issued approval or reapproval letter when reporting CTE data.
When a local agency is unable to determine the appropriate CIP code they should contact their Regional Information Centers (RIC). If need be, the RIC can contact the NYSED CTE Team at 518-486-1547 for assistance.
The National Career Clusters Framework categorizes and describes CTE program areas in a way that is consistent with the organization and descriptors used by industry and national labor codes. New York is currently transitioning to the modernized National Career Cluster Framework, updated in 2024, reducing the number of clusters from 16 to 14. This adjustment is required for federal reporting and is consistent with national efforts to more accurately represent today’s workforce and industry needs. The table below illustrates the shifts from the old framework to the modernized framework. More information about the modernized National Career Clusters Framework can be found on the Advanced CTE website. No action is required from districts and BOCES during this transition.
