Large Increase In “High Performing/Gap Closing” And “Rapidly Improving” Schools Announced
A total of 1,759 public schools, 19 charter schools, and 288 public school districts have been named “High Performing/Gap Closing” under the No Child Left Behind Act, Regents Chancellor Robert M. Bennett and State Education Commissioner Richard Mills announced today. Also, 373 schools, 10 charter schools and 62 districts have been named as “Rapidly Improving.”

Earlier today, the State Education Department announced that – as a result of the unprecedented winter storm expected to impact much of the State – school districts will be given flexibility to administer all January 2015 Regents exams and Regents Competency Tests affected by the weather. The Board of Regents today recognized outstanding New York State students receiving Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford, Chancellor Joseph McGovern, Regent Emeritus Emlyn Griffith and Regent Margaret Snow Vander Veer Scholarships as well as New York’s 2020 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program finalists at its June meeting. The Regents also honored two educators, the Regent Emeritus Louis E. Yavner Awardee, a teacher honored for contributions to teaching about the Holocaust and human rights, and the 2020 Superintendent of the Year.

New York Schools Awarded Nearly $20 Million In Critical Federal Funding To Address Covid-19 Crisis
The Board of Regents and New York State Education Department (NYSED) are pleased to announce that the United States Department of Education (USDE) announced that New York has been awarded almost $20 million for the K-12 Rethink Grant. This will provide more than 190,000 teachers and educational leaders across this State with a combined 450,000 hours of professional support to implement effective practices in remote/hybrid teaching and learning which, in turn, will reach an estimated two million students.

State Education Department to Distribute $15.6 Million
The New York State Education Department (SED) today announced federal approval of New York’s plan to distribute $15.6 million in unspent Race to the Top (RTTT) funds to local school districts to purchase instructional technology equipment and to upgrade regional technology infrastructure. Because the majority of the remaining funds were originally approved for technology projects, these funds will be targeted for technology-related projects and purchases. The funds will be allocated on a per pupil basis to all school districts throughout the State.

Rosa announced today the appointment of Dr. Mark Potter to serve as fiscal consultant for the Rochester City School District effective January 1, 2024.
