    The Board of Regents announced disciplinary actions resulting in the revocation of 2 licenses, surrender of 17 licenses, and 32 other disciplinary actions. The penalty indicated for each case relates solely to the misconduct set forth in that particular case. In addition, the Board acted upon 3 restoration petitions.

    The New York State Board of Regents announced today that Gregory Ahlquist, a high school social studies teacher at Webster Thomas High School in Webster, has been named the 2013 New York State Teacher of the Year. Ahlquist was presented with a certificate of recognition by Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch and Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. Ahlquist was also presented with the Thomas Sobol Award and the David Johnson Award, both created as annual gifts for recipients of the Teacher of the Year award.

    Results released today show that New York State students are the largest and most diverse state population in the country taking the SAT and Advanced Placement exams.  In the 2008-2009 school year 122,790 students took AP exams and 159,886 seniors took SAT exams indicating a strong interest in preparing for and attending college.

    The State Education Department today announced that 75 percent of questions from the 2016 Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Mathematics Tests that count toward student scores are now posted online at EngageNY.org. This is more questions than ever before, and the first time this information has been available this soon. By the end of the week, several instructional reports based on the 2016 tests will be made available to districts and schools several weeks before the end of the school year.

  17. State Education Department Announces Breach of Data Held by Vendor Questar

    The State Education Department’s grades 3-8 assessment vendor, Questar Assessment, Inc., experienced a data breach affecting a small number of students registered for computer-based testing (CBT) in spring 2017, Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced today. Questar reported that its preliminary analysis shows 52 students in 5 schools are affected. This represents a fraction of one percent of the 28,000 operational CBT test takers and 60,000 CBT field test takers in spring 2017. The Department referred the matter to the New York State Attorney General’s office for investigation.

  18. State Education Department Releases Spring 2015 Grades 3-8 Assessment Results

    The State Education Department today released the results of the 2015 Grades 3-8 English Language Arts (ELA) and Math Tests. Overall, students statewide have made incremental progress in ELA and math since 2013, the first year assessments aligned to the more rigorous learning standards were administered in grades 3-8. In ELA, the percentage of all test takers in grades 3-8 who scored at the proficient level (Levels 3 and 4) remained consistent in 2015 at 31.3 compared to 30.6 in 2014 and 31.1 in 2013.
