    Ms. Jennifer Kreuscher, a first grade teacher in the North Babylon Union Free School District, has been named the 2014 recipient of the Better Beginnings Award.  The award, which is sponsored by the Board of Regents, celebrates the life and career of Helen Bach Moss, a young New York State educator who passed away in 1988.  It recognizes elementary teachers who are skilled at engaging young minds and nurturing relationships with elementary school students.

    The New York State Board of Regents today announced that Charles Giglio has been named the 2015 New York State Teacher of the Year. Giglio, a Latin teacher at the Gloversville Enlarged School District in Gloversville, NY, was presented with a certificate of recognition by Regents Chancellor Merryl H. Tisch and Education Commissioner John B. King, Jr. Giglio was also presented with the Thomas Sobol Award and the David Johnson Award, both created as annual gifts for recipients of the Teacher of the Year award.

  7. Commissioner Mills Names 15 New SURR Schools, Announces 5 Others To Close

    State Education Commissioner Richard Mills today placed 15 Schools Under Registration Review SURR and reached agreements with New York City and Poughkeepsie to phase out and close five schools that otherwise would have been named to the SURR list.

    In addition, seven schools have improved enough to come off the SURR list. And eight current (SURR) schools will be phased out and closed.

    These actions bring the total number of Schools Under Registration Review to 68 statewide, 32 of them in New York City.
