    The New York State Archives invites students statewide to enter the 27th Annual Student Research Awards Contest.   8. State Education Department Proposes Rule to Allow Individual Evaluation for Certain Teaching Certificate Titles

    Update: Public comments will be accepted through June 25, 2018

    The State Education Department today proposed regulatory changes to reinstate an individual evaluation pathway in certain certificate titles for teacher candidates who have not completed an approved teacher education program but have completed coursework and field experience. The change will help school districts find qualified teachers in certificate areas that have been difficult to fill.

  10. Board of Regents Recognizes Winners of Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarships

    The Board of Regents today recognized two outstanding New York State students receiving Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarships at the Board’s May meeting, Commissioner Betty A. Rosa announced. The scholarship is named for Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, the first African American and the first woman to serve as Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents. Through Dr. Sanford’s generosity, the scholarships are awarded annually to exceptional My Brother’s Keeper (MBK) Fellows and graduating high school seniors from NYSED-recognized MBK communities.

    Under the direction of Board of Regents Chancellor Betty A. Rosa, the State Education Department today proposed to extend the transition period for Annual Professional Performance Reviews (APPR) through the 2019-20 school year. This additional year is necessary for the Department to fully implement the Common Core Task Force’s recommendations, while the Department works with educators and stakeholders to develop an evaluation system that better supports teaching and learning.

    State Education Commissioner Richard Mills today removed 25 schools from Schools Under Registration Review (SURR) status, the largest number of schools ever removed from registration review in a year.  SURR schools are those farthest from meeting State standards and face the possibility of closure if they do not make improvements required by the Commissioner.

    Public Comment Period Begins December 27, 2017

    Update: Public comments will be accepted through February 26, 2018

    The Board of Regents today adopted regulations to expand the criteria under which students with disabilities may be eligible to graduate high school with a local diploma. The amendments to the “superintendent determination” option will be in effect for students seeking to graduate in January 2018 and thereafter.

  27. State Education Department Proposes Changes to Enhance Teacher Preparation Programs to Better Serve English Language Learners

    The State Education Department today proposed regulatory changes that would require teacher preparation programs in certain subject areas to dedicate at least three of the currently required six semester hours in language acquisition and literacy development to language acquisition and literacy development of English language learners (ELLs), Commissioner MaryEllen Elia announced. The revision would apply to registered programs beginning on September 1, 2022.
