Unit Planning Guidance

The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages has developed a variety of tools and resources to assist educators in developing thematic units aligned to the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages, including:

• Thematic Thinking Cards - a set of cards with themes and topics that can be used to brainstorm thematic unit ideas
• Language Functions Reference Sheet - a list of verbs that illustrate the key language functions by standard
• Unit plan templates and checklists - blank and annotated unit planning templates, as well as a checklists for educators to self-assess their unit plans to ensure alignment with the standards
• Curriculum audit, framework, and scope and sequence planning documents - resource to ensure a school's curriculum represents a broad representation themes and topics repeatedly spiraled throughout each checkpoint through thematic units
