Prekindergarten Attendance Matters
Regular attendance in prekindergarten is essential for building the academic and social-emotional foundation young children need to thrive in school and beyond. In these early years, students develop critical skills in literacy, numeracy, and problem-solving, while also learning routines, forming relationships, and gaining confidence. Given prekindergarten is non-compulsory in New York State, families may not always be aware of the significant long-term benefits of consistent participation.
The three documents provided on this page offer guidance and resources to help schools and districts promote strong attendance habits from the very beginning of a child’s educational journey.
Attendance Tier 1
Tier 1 is meant to inform all students/families to promote good attendance habits early on. This flyer would be great to include in welcome back to school packets.
Attendance Tier 2
Tier 2 is for some students/families who are on the cusp of chronic absenteeism and would benefit from early intervention. This flyer can be posted on bulletin boards in the main office for viewers to get a quick overview about the importance of good attendance practices.
Attendance Tier 3
Tier 3 is for a more targeted group of students who are chronically absent and are in need of more immediate and intensive support. This flyer can be shared with families who struggle with chronic absenteeism and need additional support and resources to improve their child’s attendance. It addresses the “How To’s” of improving attendance, starting in the home.
