Understanding the Standards (Modern Languages)
To assist educators in understanding how to read the NYS Learning Standards for World Languages, the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages created the document "How to Read the NYS World Language Standards (Modern Languages)". The standards consist of four elements:
- Contexts for Communication: the circumstances in which communication takes place
- Language Functions: the purposes for communication
- Language Skills: the modalities through which communication occurs
- Cultural Knowledge: information about the target culture, implicit or explicit

The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages has created a series of posters to help teachers better understand the three modes of communication. Each poster lists the standard, its defining characteristics, sample strategies at each checkpoint, and example tasks by modality.
This poster series is available for both categories of modern languages in two formats: standard 8.5 X 11 (letter) and 11 X 17 (tabloid).
