Updated ELL Identification and Continued Eligibility of English as a New Language services

September 4, 2020

In order to align with NYSED’s current COVID-19 Guidance, the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) has created a revised Parent Notification Letter. This letter has been translated into the 10 languages most commonly spoken by English Language Learners (ELLs) in New York State.

Districts and schools may use this letter to inform them of their child’s ELL Identification status and the continued provision of English as a New Language (ENL) services.

Due to the cancellation of the 2020 New York State English as a Second Language Achievement Test (NYSESLAT), ELLs will be provided services based on their previously determined English language proficiency level.

This updated letter replaces the existing Parent Notification letters for the 2020-21 school year and can be used until further guidance regarding ELL Identification and NYSESLAT testing is issued by NYSED.

This letter is available in English and the other 10 languages:
