What Every School Counselor Needs to Know about World Languages
Presenter: Candace Black
Webinar date & time: Tuesday, October 21st, 2025, 4:00-5:00 pm via Zoom
The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) presents this next webinar in the 2025-26 school year: What Every School Counselor Needs to Know about World Languages. While the intended audience for this webinar is school counselors, any NYS educator or administrator that advises students is welcome to attend. This webinar is offered free of charge with one (1) hour of CTLE credit offered.
Webinar description: Navigating the NYS diploma requirements for world languages can be challenging. This webinar will demystify the various regulations on earning world language credit. Common and not-so-common issues will be presented, including best practices for student placement, middle and high school programs, transfer credit, the 4+1 pathway in world languages, and what to do when a student doesn’t meet the requirement to earn credit. We will also address the unique situation of awarding credit from “weekend schools” and from school attendance and residency abroad. The presentation will be centered around how school counselors can play a vital role in supporting students to plan for college and career readiness in our increasingly global society. Ample time for questions will be provided.
