The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) presents this next webinar: Classical Language Culture Standards: From Definition to Integration. This webinar is offered free of charge for world language educators and administrators working and studying in New York State educational institutions. 1 hour of CTLE credit is offered.
Webinar description: “Learners use knowledge of classical languages to ..." are the words that introduce Culture Standards 4 and 5 and define the relationship between language and culture embedded in the revised New York Classical Language State Standards. Teachers of Classical Languages have always centered instruction around a strong cultural context. In this session, participants will look at the teaching of culture through the lens of the two culture standards and analyze the elements of each standard. The presenter will offer strategies for integrating the culture standards with communicative tasks at the three proficiency checkpoints.

Registration process: All participants are encouraged to pre-register for this event. Pre-registration will close on Friday, October 10, 2025; there will be no same-day registrations. Once the registrant's email address has been verified as being from a New York State school, college, or university, an email confirming their registration will be sent. Twenty-four hours prior to the event, all registered individuals will receive login instructions with the link to join the webinar. Only pre-registered attendees will be eligible for a certificate documenting attendance and/or CTLE hours.

Webinar Presenter: David Pellegrino has taught middle and high school level Latin and Spanish for 33 years and recently retired from Pittsford Mendon High School. While teaching full-time, he was the department leader of the World Language Department at Pittsford Mendon High School for over 20 years. Over the course of his career, he has presented many pedagogical workshops and continues to do so both at the local and national levels. He is currently the treasurer of the Classical Association of the Empire State.
