Statement from Chancellor Betty A. Rosa and Interim State Education Commissioner Shannon Tahoe on Board of Regents Appointments

We are thrilled to congratulate Regents Cashin, Collins, Ouderkirk, Tilles and Young on their re-elections to the Board of Regents.  Each of them has been steadfast in their work to ensure that every student in New York has access to a high-quality education, regardless of where they come from, where they live or where they go to school.

Each Regent has played an invaluable role in shaping the Board’s work on many critically important issues including the implementation of high quality learning standards; offering students multiple, rigorous pathways to earn a meaningful high school diploma; advancing comprehensive funding proposals designed to provide equity in New York’s schools; expanding access to educational programs in our State’s museums and cultural institutions;  promoting our priorities in higher education that focus on access to post-secondary opportunities;  expanding teacher certification pathways; reviewing the state’s graduation measures; and increasing awareness of the career opportunities offered to New Yorkers through the more than 50 professions licensed by NYSED.

We are also delighted to welcome Dr. Frances Wills to the Board of Regents and look forward to working with her to raise the knowledge, skill, and opportunity of all the people in New York.  Dr. Wills brings decades of experience in education and work on behalf of New York’s schoolchildren with her to the position, most recently serving as Superintendent of the Putnam Valley School District.  We are confident that Dr. Wills will make many important contributions to the Board’s work.
