The State Aid Office is responsible for the calculation, payment, verification, and projection of over $35 billion in state aid, distributed annually to the school districts and BOCSE in support of public elementary and secondary education in New York State. Data is currently collected from over 700 school districts and 37 BOCES via the State Aid Management System (SAMS), a custom web-based software system. Office responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Researching data outliers for the Legislature, Governor, Bureau Chief, and others, to ensure data and aid payments and/or projections are accurate;
- Developing and implementing guidelines and procedures to assist school districts and BOCES;
- Providing technical assistance to school administrators and other agency staff based on aid formulas, payment formulas, statutes, and regulations;
- Reviewing enacted legislation and determining appropriate action related to aid calculations and payments;
- Preparing reports using a variety of software tools for transmission to school districts and BOCES, NYS agencies, and SED offices;
- Using SAMS to perform the annual review of school district claim submissions to ensure reasonability of data for use in aid calculations and projections, payments, and reporting.
Interns will be directly engaged in the following activities and assignments:
- Assisting in the review of enacted legislation, including legislation regarding zero-emission buses;
- Assisting in recommendations related to enacted legislation;
- Assisting in the review of web content for State Aid websites.
Interns will attend meetings, gain direct feedback from professionals, and have exposure to program operations.
Interns should be interested in numbers, data, or finance, be passionate about learning and how policy becomes action, and should be analytical, either conceptually or technically.
Scheduling can be flexible in conjunction with the supervisor, but will not exceed more than 20 hours each week.
This is an unpaid internship; we are happy to work with students to earn academic credit for their work with SED.
To apply, students must submit their resume, transcript, cover letter, and signed application to INTERNSHIPS@nysed.gov, referencing job ID OMS-SP26-1 in their email subject line. Applications will only be considered complete if they have been signed by both the student. Failure to follow these instructions will result in delayed or denied consideration.
