Workshop Description:
The New York State Education Department Bilingual Common Core Progressions (BCCP), designed to support Bilingual and/or Home Language Arts teachers in implementing the Common Core State Standards (CCSS) with ELLs will be the foundation for Dr. Patricia Velasco’s workshop. Among the topics to be explored include:
Overview of the CCSS and the BCCP: Presence of the Home Language Arts Progressions (HLAP) in the New Language Arts Progressions (NLAP)
- Current conceptualizations about language development including academic language
- Direct focus on the speaking and listening standards as the basis for bi-literacy development
- Building background knowledge as a key component in reading comprehension
- Strategies for scaffolding writing instruction and biliterate assessments will be offered
- Reading strategies for content area reading in upper grades
