Presentational and Interpersonal Communication for Classical Languages Part 2

Original webinar date & time:  Tuesday, May 27, 2025, 4:00-5:00 pm

The Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) of the New York State Education Department (NYSED) presents Presentational and Interpersonal Communication for Classical Languages - Part II: Spoken Latin Strategies.  This webinar is offered free of charge for world language educators and administrators working and studying in New York State educational institutions.  1 hour of CTLE credit offered.

Webinar description:  This webinar will introduce some strategies to facilitate speaking Latin in presentational and interpersonal situations. We will start off by looking at how speaking can bolster Latin learning. Then we will consider different strategies for Checkpoints A, B, and C to get students speaking, along with scaffolds that are helpful to carry out different language functions.  Ideas will be offered for formative assessments at each checkpoint that can give the teacher and student information about the student's current performance level along with some ways to provide students with feedback for improvement.

Post-assessments  (Coming soon!)

To receive a certificate of completion (including a CTLE certificate), NYS educators must view the recording of the webinar (see link above) in its entirety and then answer at least seven out of ten questions correctly on the post assessment.  If the minimum required score (7 out of 10) is achieved, the educator will receive a certificate via email within an hour.  For the convenience of our World Language educators, there are multiple versions of the post assessment available, should the required score not be achieved on the first attempt.  Educators may take each version of the post assessment once.

Important notes:

  1. Educators may take each version of the post assessment once.  Credit will not be given for taking a single version of the post assessment more than once.
  2. Credit will not be given for more than one passing score on any of the post assessments for a webinar (listed below) in a single academic year.
  3. Educators may receive credit for viewing the webinar recording and passing a post assessment once in each academic year and are encouraged to take a different version of the post assessment on a yearly basis to review and test their knowledge of the webinar's content.
  4. It is the responsibility of the individual educator to keep track of the information on the professional learning they complete each year, including the number of CTLE hours.
  5. Questions about this webinar or the post assessments, should be directed to OBEWL at (518) 473-7505 or nysworldlanguages@gmail.com.

Webinar presenter:  Keziah Armstrong has been working for the Shenendehowa School District for 25 years as a world language teacher, mostly in the Latin language.  A native of New York state, both her bachelor's and master's degrees were earned at the SUNY Albany. More recently, Keziah has been attending spoken Latin classes and conventions since 2020, culminating in earning a Latin Certificate from the University of Kentucky in the winter of 2023. "Magistra" Armstrong is active in her local, state, and national Classics organizations and has presented on language pedagogy and strategies over the years. In her communicative classroom, each of her classes is designed to include speaking, listening, reading and writing. Keziah continues to implement speaking, listening, and writing  in her checkpoint B and C classes. This practice supports the important objective for most Latin teachers which is reading what Latin authors have communicated and continue to communicate from B.C.E through the C.E.
