World Languages Leadership Team
The World Languages Leadership Team is working with the New York State Education Department (NYSED) and the Office of Bilingual Education and World Languages (OBEWL) to plan and implement the Languages Other than English (LOTE) Standards Revision Process. Membership on this team comes from a variety of statewide organizations, various school districts and the Regional Bilingual Education Resource Networks (RBERN). The end product of this team will be a set of recommended revised standards for World Languages to be submitted to the Board of Regents for consideration and adoption in the summer of 2020 with a graduated implementation schedule beginning in the 2021-22 school year.
World Languages Standards Review Regional Committees and Language-Specific Committees
In May 2019, seven committees were formed to give input into the World Languages Standards Review Process. These regions are: Capital-East, Hudson Valley, Long Island, Mid-State, Mid-West, New York City and West. Three language-specific committees were also formed to provide the expertise necessary in crafting guidance documents for American Sign Language, Indigenous Languages and Latin and Classical Languages. In total, these 10 committees are comprised of approximately 220 stakeholders, including world language teachers from elementary to post-secondary schools, world language administrators, parents, students, community members and leaders from statewide and regional language organizations. These committees have met monthly since May to make recommended revisions to the World Language Standards to inform the decisions made by the World Language Leadership Team before final revisions are submitted to the New York State Board of Regents for their consideration.
