Amendment of Section 100.5 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education Relating to Career and Technical Education (CTE) and Media Arts Course Flexibility for the Individual Arts Assessment Pathway (IAAP) and CTE Pathways to High School Graduation
Date:
April 12, 2024

At the March 2024 Board of Regents meeting, the Board approved for permanent adoption the amendment of section 100.5 of the Regulations of the Commissioner of Education relating to career and technical education (CTE) and media arts course flexibility for the Individual Arts Assessment Pathway (IAAP) and Career and Technical Education (CTE) Pathway to high school graduation. These regulations become effective March 27, 2024.

The amendment provides local discretion on how to distribute credit for media arts courses within a CTE or IAAP sequence when these courses are taught by a visual arts certified teacher or an appropriately certified CTE teacher.  Specifically, the amendment allows media arts courses approved by the New York State Education Department (NYSED) to be included in the three units of diploma credit in an IAAP sequence or in a student’s NYSED-approved CTE program regardless of whether the teacher is appropriately CTE or arts certified.  The media arts courses that can utilize this flexibility can be found on the List of Department-approved media arts courses for use in student’s IAAP sequence and NYSED-approved CTE program

For additional information regarding the flexibility provided by the amendment, please see the CTE and Media Arts Course Flexibility for the IAAP and CTE Pathway Frequently Asked Questions webpage. Questions regarding this memorandum, may be directed to either the Office of Standards and Instruction (OSI) at emscurric@nysed.gov or the Office of CTE at emsccte@nysed.gov.
