State Library Cataloging Summer Internship

Program Office/Description: 

The Cataloging Unit creates and maintains metadata for bibliographic description and items held in the New York State Library collections. The description is created in accordance with international rules known as Resource Description and Access (RDA), Anglo American Cataloging Rules revised (AACR2), Library of Congress Policy Statement (LCPS), and local practice. The metadata is created using Machine-Readable Cataloging 21 (MARC21) format.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

The Cataloging Unit is seeking an intern to create and update the MARC holdings for State and Federal serials. This will require them to systematics going through the Government Document collections to note all the issues that we have. Create a markup of the holdings using MARC21 for holdings in the library's management system (Sirsi), and in OCLC Worldcat database. They would also learn how to update serial bibliographic records.

Reporting to the Head of Cataloging, the students will receive training in reading and editing MARC21 bibliographic records, and editing/creating MARC holding records.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

This position is open to matriculated graduate students pursuing a Masters in Library, Information Science, or a related field.

Schedule/Hours: 

Student may work up to 29 hours per week during the hours of 8 am to 4 pm, Monday through Friday.
