Open File Collections Intern

Research and Collections at the New York State Museum is focused on curating collections and encouraging their use for research and education.  Our responsibilities are: cataloging and inventorying the collections, facilitating their use by outside researchers, conducting original scientific research using the collection, and educating the public through public programs and exhibits.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

This intern will be overseen by NYSM Geologic Open File staff. This intern will be responsible for creating digital copies of analog records to increase accessibility to geologic records.

The Open File Collection is a resource for researchers studying every type of geology across NYS. Most researchers request unpublished, annotated field maps that contain pertinent geologic information. In addition to these maps, there are over 400 field notebooks that contain more comprehensive information related to the maps such as locality data and more detailed geologic information. These notebooks are a crucial element to providing accurate and complete information to researchers. 

The project proposed for an intern will be to locate the field notebooks within the collection, make each digital, transcribe them from script in both English and German, create more detailed metadata for each based on transcription, and rehouse each archivally.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

The intern should be enrolled in, accepted to, or on break from an Information Science program at any 2 or 4 year school and have an interest in Museum studies or information science.

Schedule/Hours: 

Intern must be available to work at the NYSM on at least one day Monday - Friday between the hours of 7:00am and 3:00pm.  A minimum of 8 hours per week is required, which can be completed one day per week or over multiple days per week.v
