Program Office/Description: 

The NYSED Office of Professional Discipline investigates and prosecutes cases involving professional misconduct committed by licensees from more than 50 different professions. The Prosecutions Division works with investigators and board members, negotiates settlements,  drafts memos and briefs, and represents the office at conferences, proceedings, and hearings.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Legal interns should be current law students who will be conducting legal and factual research and analysis of professional misconduct matters that occurred in other states. The interns will be drafting memoranda summarizing the facts, procedural history, legal issues, and the applicable rules and laws. The position will involve working closely with a legal assistant and two prosecuting attorneys, who will discuss and review the work. There will also be some opportunity to assist with hearing preparation, observe hearings, and possibly help draft pleadings and appear at settlement conferences. Under a newly approved practice order by the New York State Courts, interns would be permitted to participate in administrative hearings, under supervision of a prosecutor.

Law interns in this program will receive considerable feedback from supervising prosecuting attorneys, in terms of their writing and analysis. They will also have the opportunity to assist with conferences and hearings under supervision.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

All applicants should be rising 2L or 3L in an accredited law school. We are interested in students who possess strong writing and analytical skills, and have shown a demonstrated interest in public service and/or litigation practice.

Schedule/Hours: 

Interns will work a flexible schedule between 8a-5p, Monday through Friday, maximum of 29 hours per week.
