Education Policy Research and Development Summer Internship

Program Office/Description: 

The Policy Research & Development team within the Office of P12 Instructional Support provides centralized support and coordination assistance in the following areas: strategic innovation and initiatives; education research and data analytics; grant opportunity identification, proposal writing, and performance management; research- and data-related partnerships; design of innovative programs; program evaluation; and dissemination of research and ideas. A primary responsibility of this team is the design and implementation of the Performance-Based Learning and Assessment Networks (PLAN) pilot program. The PLAN program aims to help New York explore the conditions and supports schools and educators need to shift their instructional practices with the ultimate goal of improved outcomes for students. Through this program, NYSED will develop systems of support, policies, guidance, tools, and resources to support schools across New York State to implement PBLA and instructional practices that use multiple measures to assess student learning. The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Internship assignments and activities would include, but not be limited to:

1. Assisting Department program staff with the PLAN Pilot, including drafting and reviewing written materials, assisting staff in managing advisory meetings, and supporting event planning

2. Assisting staff in research and analysis to support Department projects and initiatives

3. Assisting staff with preparing for meetings of the Board of Regents

4. Participating in meetings and conferences

5. General office functions and correspondence

Intern will have the opportunity to experience the implementation of a statewide pilot program and assist in developing information sessions and professional learning experiences. Other potential opportunities may include participation in communities of practices focused on performance-based learning and assessment as well as experience with large-scale research projects.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Preference will be given to:

  • Graduate-level students
  • Students majoring in education, public policy, or related field
  • Ideal candidates will have strong proficiency in the Microsoft Office suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, SharePoint, Forms).
Schedule/Hours: 

15-20 hours per week, from Monday to Friday between 8a and 5p.
