June 2021
Dr. Anael Alston
Dear Colleagues, Partners, and Friends,

This has been a year like no other. I would like to extend my sincere thanks for your dedication to ensuring your students have the support they need as they strive for excellence and continue on the path to success. I know your commitment to your students has made a positive impact when it has been needed most.

This summer, we are looking forward to the opportunity to connect with our Teacher Opportunity Corps II (TOC II) students and staff. Registration for our TOC II Summit in July is now open. This year's theme is "Racial and Digital Literacies." If you have not already done so, register today! Please speak to your My Brother's Keeper (MBK) Project Director for registration information. Registration closes on July 12th at 10 AM. Act NOW as “seats” are limited.

In addition, we have a unique opportunity coming up on June 24 to hear a dialogue between students and U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona. Two students from New York City’s MBK program will be featured in the discussion as students share their learning experiences during the pandemic. Registration information is available in this newsletter.

Speaking of outstanding students, we would like to recognize, once again, the recipients of the 2021 Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarship. This year’s awardees, Giovanni Almonte of Yonkers City School District and Kenedi Catoe of Greenburgh Central School District, inspire us with their hard work and commitment to their communities. Congratulations, Giovanni and Kenedi!

Finally, I know that many of you had the opportunity to participate in our virtual NYSMBK Symposium in April. The video recordings of all sessions, including the breakout sessions and a welcome from President Obama, are now available! Please take some time to explore any of the speakers, panels, and topics you may have missed!

At the 2021 Symposium, the New York State Education Department (NYSED) named the fourth class of NYSMBK Fellows. We are proud to highlight these impressive young men in this newsletter with their names, pictures, and schools. We hope you enjoy learning about our Fellows.

For more information about these topics and more, check out our MBK website and subscribe to our MBK newsletter for regular updates.

On June 24 from 7-8 PM EST, The Education Trust and Chalkbeat will present students in dialogue with U.S. Secretary of Education Miguel Cardona.

Students will share their own experiences of learning during a pandemic and ask Secretary Cardona questions about the policy changes they seek in their schools, districts, and communities. Two students from New York City’s MBK program will be featured in the discussion.

Following the panel, Chalkbeat managing editor Sarah Darville will interview Secretary Cardona about students' return to school buildings, planning for next school year, and the live discussions across the country about how to teach history and address racism.

2021 MBK Symposium Video Recordings Available
NYSED hosted the 2021 New York State My Brother’s Keeper Symposium on April 29-30, 2021. Hundreds of students, parents, educational leaders, advocates, and experts from across the nation came together virtually for the fourth symposium on My Brother’s Keeper, the initiative to help boys and young men of color—and all students—realize their full potential. The event featured nationally renowned guest speakers and student and educator panels.

Video recordings from the Symposium, including the breakout sessions, are now available on the NYSMBK website.
Congratulations to the Winners of the 2021
Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarship
The Board of Regents recognized two outstanding New York State students receiving Vice Chancellor Emerita Adelaide L. Sanford Scholarships at the Board’s April meeting. The scholarship is named for Dr. Adelaide L. Sanford, the first African American, as well as the first woman, to serve as Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents. Through Dr. Sanford’s generosity, it is awarded annually to exceptional MBK Fellows and graduating high school seniors from a NYSED-recognized MBK community. This year’s recipients are Giovanni Almonte of Yonkers City School District and Kenedi Catoe of Greenburgh Central School District.

Dr. Sanford is the former Vice Chancellor of the Board of Regents and served on the Board for more than 20 years. She is also Honorary Co-Chair of the Work Group to Improve Outcomes for Boys and Young Men of Color, in recognition of her unwavering leadership and ongoing meaningful contributions to this effort.
