Office of Prosecutions Spring Internship (Downstate)
The NYSED Office of Professional Discipline investigates and prosecutes cases involving professional misconduct committed by licensees from more than 50 different professions. The Prosecutions Division works with investigators and board members, negotiates settlements, drafts memos and briefs, and represents the office at conferences, proceedings and hearings.
Legal interns should be current law students who will be conducting legal and factual research and analysis of professional misconduct matters that occurred in other states. The interns will be drafting memoranda summarizing the facts, procedural history, legal issues and the applicable rules and laws. The position will involve working closely with a legal assistant and two prosecuting attorneys, who will discuss and review the work. There will also be some opportunity to assist with hearing preparation, observe hearings, and possibly help draft pleadings and appear at settlement conferences. Under a newly approved practice order by the New York State Courts, interns would be permitted to participate in administrative hearings, under supervision of a prosecutor.
Law interns in this program will receive considerable feedback from supervising prosecuting attorneys, in terms of their writing and analysis. They may also have the opportunity to assist with conferences and hearings under supervision.
All applicants should be 2L or 3L at local law schools. We are interested in students who possess good writing and analytical skills, and have shown a demonstrated interest in public service and/or litigation practice.
Interns are expected to work approximately 15-20 hours per week with days and hours to be determined according to class schedule.
Qualified candidates should email a cover letter, resume, transcript (student copy is acceptable), and completed internship application to firstname.lastname@example.org. Please include he Assignment Number (OP-SP24-2) in the subject line of your email to reference this assignment.
