Registered Nurse 1, Grade 18 (PEF)

(Second Shift)

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Education Policy is seeking candidates for a Registered Nurse 1 position in the New York State School for the Blind (NYSSB). The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the health care of students and the supervision of Licensed Practical Nurses. Duties of this position include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Serve as a resource and educate the nursing staff on student care;
  • Supervise and evaluate the Licensed Practical Nurses; 
  • Oversee the initiation, proper handling, and maintenance of student health records;
  • Communicate appropriately and professionally with students, direct care staff, parents, and other health agencies;
  • Conduct nursing assessments and evaluations;
  • Verify physician orders for correct transcription and administer medication and treatments as ordered;
  • Oversee the development and evaluation of individualized nursing care plans;
  • Implement nursing actions that promote and maintain health, prevent illness, and are unique to each students’ needs;
  • Readily and capably responds to medical emergencies;
  • Effectively communicate all pertinent information and data with the Registered Nurse Supervisor 1;
  • Evaluate and maintain infection control standards; and
  • Provide health education and guidance to parents, guardians, staff, and students.
Minimum Qualifications: 

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as a Registered Nurse 1.

Section 70.1 Transfer:  Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55 b/c service in a title SG-16 or above deemed eligible for transfer under Section 70.1 of the Civil Service Law. To qualify for transfer, candidates must possess a license and current registration to practice nursing in New York State.

Provisional Appointment: In the absence of an eligible list with three or more candidates willing to accept a position, a temporary provisional appointment may be considered. For provisional appointment, candidates must possess a license and current registration to practice nursing in New York State. Provisional candidates must take the examination for Registered Nurse 1 when it is next offered, and must be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment.

55b/c Appointment: This position is eligible for 55b/c designation and is subject to verification of applicant eligibility. Candidates must possess the minimum qualifications and a current 55b/c eligibility letter.

Conditions of Employment: 

This will be a contingent permanent appointment or a temporary provisional appointment. Provisional candidates must take the examination for Registered Nurse 1 when it is next offered and must be reachable on the resulting eligible list to maintain employment. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of licensure and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse will be required at the time of interview for all candidates. Candidates are required to possess a license and a registration as a Registered Professional Nurse at the time of hire. Continued employment as a Registered Nurse 1 is dependent upon maintaining a license and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse. Failure to maintain a license and registration as a Registered Professional Nurse will result in removal from employment. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Department of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Candidates must have the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children. The work schedule for this position will be Monday through Thursday, 1:00pm - 11:00pm.

This position leads to a maximum salary of $77,912 based on annual performance advances.

Based on this position’s location, in addition to the listed base salary, this position also receives an annual $20,000 Statewide geographic pay differential, an annual 7% shift pay differential, and an annual $575 inconvenience pay.
