Dear Families,
Commissioner Rosa
I hope you are enjoying the summer recess and taking advantage of the many learning and support options available to families and students this summer in New York State. These include:

I would also like to share the exciting news that two New York State mathematics teachers and three New York State science teachers are state-level finalists for the 2021 Presidential Awards for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST) at the secondary level, grades 7-12. This is one of the most prestigious honors in the nation for teachers, recognizing exemplary teaching and leadership in mathematics and science education.

Congratulations to our state finalists Rachel Linehan from Bethlehem Central School District, Harry O’Malley from Williamsville Central School District, Kristen Drury from William Floyd Central School District, Sarah English from Sweet Home Central School District, and Brittany Kozlenko from Brewster Central School District on this prestigious honor. We are so proud of their accomplishments and grateful for the outstanding work they do with and for our students.

Finally, here are some updates concerning issues related to COVID-19:

  • As of June 25, 2021, the state of emergency declared by the Governor in March 2020 is no longer in effect; however, the COVID-19 crisis continues to affect New York State. In response, the Board of Regents has adopted an additional series of emergency regulations that extend flexibility for educators, students, and professionals to address issues due to the COVID-19 pandemic. A full summary of this month’s series of emergency regulations is available here.
  • Additionally, as we look to welcoming students back in September, the Department understands the urgency of the need for clear and timely guidelines for school districts from the State Department of Health. We have been in contact with the Governor’s office about these issues and are advocating for approaches that protect health and safety while easing burdens on students, families, and our schools where possible.

I appreciate your continued support of our efforts to expand educational opportunity for all of our students, and I hope you will encourage other parents and families to subscribe to this newsletter so we can all stay connected in support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Betty A. Rosa
Commissioner
