New York State Museum Geologist Chuck Ver Straeten will share some of his extensive knowledge about the rocks of the Catskill Mountains on this hike to the quarries in the Devil’s Kitchen area and on to Codfish Point. Most of the hike is along the trail toward Overlook Mountain, with stops at the quarry at Codfish Point and a possible bushwhack to a quarry on Plattekill Mountain. This is a moderate hike of 5 miles roundtrip and an elevation change of 1,000 feet.

The group will meet in the Kaaterskill Rail Trail parking lot at the Mountain Top Historical Society campus in Haines Falls, New York, at 10 a.m. to carpool to the Catskill Center property in Platte Clove. This hike will not descend into Platte Clove. Wear hiking shoes and proper attire. Pack water and a lunch. For more information, please call (518) 589-6657.
Collections Spotlight: Whales
It's often difficult for museums to take whale specimens into their collections as the skeletons take up quite a bit of space!

The largest mammal species on earth, the blue whale, can measure up to 100 feet long and can weigh over 170 tons! Fortunately, the New York State Museum maintains a representative collection of both toothed and baleen whales that can be found in the ocean off the coast of New York.

The State Museum has several whale specimens curated in the mammalogy collections including a Right Whale, Fin Whale, Cuvier’s Beaked Whale, and Minke Whale.
