New Guidance - Relief from Requirements for Multiple Reporting of Reportable Incidents
Date:
June 1, 2017

Attached is a memorandum from the Justice Center for the Protection of People with Special Needs (Justice Center) regarding new guidance for multiple reporting of reportable incidents. This memorandum provides additional guidance to mandated reporters who have a legal responsibility under the New York State Protection of People with Special Needs Act to report Abuse, Neglect and Significant Incidents involving vulnerable persons to the Vulnerable Persons’ Central Register, a 24/7 hotline operated by the Justice Center. We are requesting your assistance in distributing copies of this memorandum to your staff to ensure that they are aware of the new reporting requirements, which went into effect on June 1, 2017.

New York State Education Department (NYSED) regulations governing reportable
incidents in approved residential schools can be found on NYSED’s website. Additional information regarding New York State Protection of People with Special Needs Act is available on the Justice
Center’s website. (https://www.justicecenter.ny.gov/) A copy of the full text of the law can
be viewed on the Governor’s website.

I appreciate your attention to these important matters. Questions regarding the mandated reporting requirements should be directed to the Justice Center at (518) 549-0200.
