The Office of Accountability:
- Coordinates the development and implementation of New York’s Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA) plan, including administration of Title IA (Improving Basic Programs Operated by Local Educational Agencies), Title IC (Education of Migratory Children), Title ID (Prevention and Intervention Programs for Children and Youth who are Neglected, Delinquent or At-Risk), Title IIA (Supporting Effective Instruction, Title VB (Rural Education Initiative), and the McKinney-Vento program for homeless children and youth.
- Assesses the performance of schools and districts and identifies Targeted Support and Improvement schools, Comprehensive Support and Improvement schools and Recognition schools.
- Assists districts in determining and implementing the appropriate strategies in the State’s lowest performing schools by using the Diagnostic Tool for School and District Effectiveness (DTSDE).
- Provides technical assistance in areas where Local Education Agencies are most likely to be out of compliance.
- Builds capacity across the state so that districts can conduct high quality DTSDE reviews.
- Works with Recognition schools to disseminate their best practices across the State.
- Oversees the School Receivership Program in New York State for schools that have been identified as Persistently Struggling of Struggling. (Interim)
- Oversees and administers the Persistently Struggling Schools Grant (PSSG) program, the School Improvement Grant program, and the Community Schools Grant (CSG) for Receivership Schools program, including approving grants and budget proposal and monitoring and evaluating program implementation. (Interim)
- Generates monitoring reports and data for schools and districts based on the results from on-site visits and desk audits.
- Calculates and coordinates measures used in student, educator, and institutional accountability determinations.
- Manages accountability databases and develops business rules for data collection.
- Conducts research and data analysis in collaboration with other NYSED offices and oversees research conducted under contract by external vendors.
- Makes recommendations to senior managers regarding policies pertaining to academic proficiency standards, school and district improvement strategies, institutional and educator accountability systems, and or other policies intended to ensure that all students across the State are college- and career- ready.

The intern(s) will assist with:
- All ESSA related tasks
- The Public School Registration process
- The Self -Assessment Process
- Logging and revising DTSDE reports
- The creation and maintenance of files
- Preparation and proofreading of documents
- Logistical needs (when necessary)
- The preparation of letters and documents
- Conducting research
- Phone calls and providing occasional phone coverage
- Ad hoc assignments
Upon selection, interns receive an orientation regarding the functions of the New York State Education
Department, its system of accountability and the confidentiality that they are expected to uphold during their “employment.”
Selected intern(s) have opportunities to learn a wide variety of skills through project based assignments. Weekly meetings to discuss the assignments are used to provide feedback on performance and to get input on how to make improvements to processes.
Intern(s) also participate in team meetings and observe Regents meetings (via the web).
This internship is beneficial to students pursuing a degree in education, social science, history, political science, business, computer science and/or other related fields (inclusive of law students with similar interest).
