The Office of Human Resources Management (OHRM) is comprised of 60 employees who manage various professional responsibilities within the realms of Employee Support and Policy Enforcement for the New York State Education Department. Employment begins and ends with our office, from recruitment, hiring, and staffing, to separations and retirements. We also oversee our employees' time in between by managing their benefits including leave and healthcare, professional and staff development, policy development and enforcement, professional discipline, and payroll.
Interns will assist the Office of Human Resources Management in all of the following functions:
-Assisting Executives with crafting and enforcing department-wide policies.
-Supporting processing benefits including insurance, leave, healthcare, payroll, and retirement.
-Assisting with on-boarding, new staff recruitment, and hiring procedures.
-Working with senior staff attorneys on employee relations cases and conflict resolution through legal research, negotiations, and arbitrations/settlements.
-Developing, assisting with, and leading professional development workshops.
-Drafting and publishing reference guides for department use.
-General office correspondence
-All other duties and responsibilities as assigned.
In order to offer a full perspective of our office and the expectations of a Human Resources professional, the intern will spend time working within each Division of our office: Health & Benefits, Labor Relations, Staffing, and Training.
Reporting directly to the Director of the Office of Human Resources Management, the intern will aid each given unit with their daily office functions, where appropriate. Supervisors within each division will teach interns about the work their unit does, but will also assist interns in developing their own leadership and supervisory skills through mentoring and special projects.
During their time within a division, interns will have opportunities to assist senior staff with and/or lead special projects when available, including hiring processes, conflict resolution, professional discipline, staff and professional development, employee relations, training seminars, and executive management meetings.
Ideal candidates will have:
-A desire to learn through experience, and a positive attitude in a shifting environment.
-An academic background in Human Resources Management, Business, Psychology, Sociology, Education, Humanities, Government, Public Policy, Economics, Law, Liberal Arts, or a related field of study.
-Strong writing and interpersonal communication skills.
-Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite and other relevant technical skills.
-Attention to detail, with strong organizational skills.
-The ability to confidentially handle sensitive employee information.
-Extracurricular activities which demonstrate a proven history of leadership, management, conflict resolution are a bonus, but not required.
Interns will coordinate their schedule with their supervisor in accordance with availability and office needs. Total hours are not to exceed 29 hours per week (or less, depending on the rules of the student's University). Scheduling will generally be Monday-Friday between 8:30a-5p.
