Downstate Prosecutions Winter Internship

Program Office/Description: 

To ensure public protection in New York State, the New York State Education Department's Office of the Professions (OP) investigates and prosecutes professional misconduct, the failure of a licensed professional to meet expected standards of practice, in all professions except medicine. 

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Interns will be reviewing incoming complaints of out of state misconduct, analyzing relevant statutes and case law and make a recommendation regarding prosecution. The interns will draft memoranda summarizing their legal analysis and determination.  There will also an opportunity to assist with hearing preparation, observe hearings, help draft legal pleadings, and appear at settlement conferences and hearings.  Under a newly approved practice order by the New York State Courts, interns would be permitted to participate in administrative hearings, under supervision of a prosecutor.

Law interns in this program will receive considerable feedback from supervising prosecuting attorneys on their writing and analysis.  They may also have the opportunity to assist with, or handle with supervision, conferences and hearings.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Applicants can be 1L, 2L, or 3L in an accredited local law school. Ideal applicants will possess good writing and analytical skills, and have shown a demonstrated interest in public service and/or litigation.


The intern will be expected to work 10-20 hours per week between the hours of 8am-5pm.
