Charter School Office Winter Internship

The mission of the New York State Education Department Charter School Office is to foster high quality public education options for all students, families, and communities. Our vision is to create a diverse portfolio of innovative charter schools that produce strong outcomes through a rigorous new school process, strong performance oversight and accountability, and model authorizing practices. The charter schools authorized by the Board of Regents will serve as exemplars for all public schools here in New York State and across the country.

The Assignment (Description of Job): 

Substantive work may include, but would not be limited to: 

1. Comprehensive review of Board of Regents-authorized charter school policies, including: discipline, admissions/enrollment, bylaws and complaint policies to insure that they are up-to-date and comply with current legal regulations and/or statutes.
2. Preparing and editing charter school documents and materials;
3. Other tasks as assigned.

Professional Development Plan : 

The Charter School Office will use protocols for the management of intern participation/performance.  This will include the assignment of specific projects with expected outcomes. Each project will be outlined in detail at the beginning of the internship. Weekly meetings will be held with each intern to obtain feedback regarding the progress of assigned projects and the provision of required supports. There will be an opportunity for Interns to present findings/final products related to the projects in which they have been engaged during their internship. The intern will be provided the opportunity to attend the following monthly meetings: All Staff meetings and Board of Regents meetings.

Desired Skills, Abilities, & Educational Background: 

Intern should be adept with use of MS Word, MS Excel, SharePoint, MS Teams, Zoom, WebEx and Outlook. Interns must possess an advanced level of skill in English grammar and usage and a keen eye for detail. Interns should also possess strong organizational abilities and the ability to work independently. Some of the desired educational backgrounds include: Education, Public Policy, Child Development, Political Science, Law, etc.

Schedule/Hours: 

Intern work hours will take place between the hours of 8:30 AM and 4:30 PM, Monday through Friday.  An intern who can provide a minimum of 9 and a maximum of 20 hours a week, in no less than 4 hour blocks is preferred.
