Special Education Assistant, NS (PEF)
The New York State Education Department’s School for the Deaf is seeking applicants to fill a Special Education Assistant position. The incumbent of this position will be responsible for the classroom care of students in the school’s education or residential programs. Duties of this position will include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Complete special instructional projects with individual students or groups of students;
- Provide supervision and guidance to students in the cafeteria during breakfast and lunch;
- Escort students to various classes on and off-campus;
- Provide direct instruction under the supervision and guidance of the Instructor; and
- Directly supervise students and assist in related instructional work as required.
Candidates must have a High School diploma or a High School Equivalency diploma AND the ability to perform moderate to heavy lifting of children AND a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate, OR be eligible to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment.
Preference may be given to candidates who have the following:
Experience working with students with disabilities, particularly deaf or hard of hearing students;
The ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language; and
Experience working with adults as part of a team.
This will be a permanent appointment, consisting of 183 days during the school year, 31 days during the summer, and an additional five days for program-related activities, for a total of 219 days. Fingerprinting through the Federal Bureau of Investigation and the Division of Criminal Justice Services, a background check with the Office of Children and Family Services and clearance from the Justice Center Staff Exclusion List is required for employment. Fees associated with this process are at the applicant’s expense. Fees associated with fingerprinting do not apply if applicant’s fingerprints exist in the NYS TEACH System. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Applicants should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree and/or transcripts will be required for all candidates at the time of interview. Candidates are required to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment. After one (1) year of employment, continued employment as a Special Education Assistant is dependent upon maintaining the appropriate level of certification as a New York State Teaching Assistant. Failure to obtain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate within one (1) year of employment will result in removal from employment. After one (1) year of employment, failure to maintain a New York State Teaching Assistant certificate will result in removal from employment. Candidates must obtain a New York State Level III Teaching Assistant certificate within five (5) years of employment. Failure to obtain a New York State Level III Teaching Assistant certificate within five (5) years of employment will result in removal from employment. The work schedule for this position includes the hours of Monday 7:45am–3:45pm, Tuesday through Friday 6:45am–2:45pm.
*Leads to a maximum salary of $37,612-$38,905 with annual performance advances.
