Senior Museum Exhibit Designer, Grade 17 (PEF)

(Two Positions)

The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education is seeking candidates for two Senior Museum Exhibit Designer Positions in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of the Director of Exhibitions, the incumbents in these positions are responsible for website and social media creation, development, and administration, equipment identification, media scheduling, museum exhibition interactive and media development, video production, equipment identification, media scheduling and support for the New York State Museum, and other offices as needed. Other duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Recommend website technical decisions, develop new applications, and maintain and enhance the Museum's website;
  • Plan and develop dynamic, interactive, and media-rich content for Museum exhibition spaces to include editing and drafting original content.
  • Plan, shoot, and edit professional quality video content which includes all aspects of audio/video capture, lighting, and production;
  • Work collaboratively with other departments to define web, social media, or multimedia project needs, provide guidance and identify solutions;
  • Design and implement interfaces for online and on-site digital applications, including interactive installation and mobile experiences, based on current web design standards;
  • Determine and maintain sustainable technology frameworks and information architecture for Museum website and other digital applications through the use of Drupal and the associated languages;
  • Work closely with web development vendors and SED’s IT Department to ensure optimal functionality of all Museum web presences and other public facing digital platforms;
  • Ensure that the Museum employs best practices for development documentation, workflow and version control, while promoting practices that emphasize information sharing, integration, archiving, and sustainability.
Minimum Qualifications: 

Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent, non-competitive service as a Senior Museum Exhibit Designer.

Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have six years of experience in architecture, exhibit design/planning, industrial design, museum exhibit design involving three dimensional designs, or museum exhibit production. College coursework in Architecture, Exhibition Design/Planning, Fine Arts, Media Arts, Digital Media and Communication Design, Graphic Design, Interior Design, Museum Exhibit Design, or Museum Studies may be substituted for experience on a year for year basis up to a maximum of four years with 30 semester credit hours equaling one year.

Conditions of Employment: 

These positions will be non-competitive, permanent appointments. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.

* Leads to a maximum salary of $73,813 based on annual performance advances.
