Associate Museum Exhibit Planner, Grade 21 (PEF)
(Two Positions)
The New York State Education Department’s (NYSED) Office of Cultural Education (OCE) is seeking candidates for two Associate Museum Exhibit Planner positions in the New York State Museum. Under the supervision of the Director, Museum Exhibits, each Associate Museum Exhibit Planner will serve on a multi-faceted exhibit development team. Duties of these positions include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Responsible for overall project management, leadership, and coordination of exhibits;
- Collaborate with Museum staff and external consultant scholars in natural and human history to create exhibits, provide scheduling, coordination, budgets, and correspondence for the exhibits division;
- Provide direction with the organization and establishment of exhibit teams and provide administrative support with exhibit planning and creation;
- Plan and design overall themes, messages, and interpretation of objects for exhibitions;
- Assist to develop museum interactives with content specialist and media designers;
- Write, establish content hierarchy, and edit text that accompanies exhibits; and
- Write text that is used for Museum promotional publications, brochures, flyers, newsletters, social media, webpage descriptions, and other exhibit related literature.
Reassignment: Candidates must have one year of permanent competitive or 55b/c service as an Associate Museum Exhibit Planner.
Non-Competitive Appointment: Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree in natural science (zoology, biology, geology), archaeology or anthropology, history, art or art history AND three years of professional experience at a museum or cultural institution displaying exhibits, such as an art gallery, zoo, botanical garden, educational center or historical society. A master’s degree in natural science (zoology, biology, geology), archaeology or anthropology, history, English, art, art history or in museum studies may be substituted for one year of the required experience.
These will be non-competitive, contingent permanent appointments. Promotions and transfers may change appointees’ negotiating unit. Candidates should be aware that changes in negotiating units may affect their salary, insurance, and other benefits. Verification of degree will be required at the time of interview for all candidates.
* Leads to a maximum salary of $90,657 based on annual performance advances.
