Abstract

The mission of The G.A.M.E. Tech Project (Genesee Advancing Mathematics and English Language Arts with Technology) is to increase student academic achievement as measured by New York State assessments in Mathematics and English Language Arts by providing opportunities for students to engage in learning content through technology in a way that is meaningful and authentic, enables students to solve problems and be creative. The strategy to achieve this mission is to facilitate professional development designed to help teachers become more comfortable with technology so that they can more effectively use it as a part of their classroom instruction. Library Media Specialists and students will use instructional technology kits to design, develop and facilitate collaborative projects with teachers. By the end of the proposed 31-month project: 140 students in Kindergarten – Grade 8 will have the opportunity to be deeply involved in the design, development, and facilitation of collaborative projects as members of The G.A.M.E. Tech Team; 11 Library Media Specialists will take part in year-long, imbedded professional development with a coach from the Genesee Valley Education Partnership and community resource partners; 190 collaborative projects will be facilitated among students in The G.A.M.E. Tech Team, Library Media Specialists, and classroom teachers; and, 5,700 students will benefit from these collaborative projects that are opportunities for students to engage in learning content through technology in a way that is meaningful and authentic, enable students to solve problems and be creative.

The three outcome objectives of The G.A.M.E. Tech Project are (1) Increase the percentage of students achieving proficiency at Batavia Middle School: five percent by the end of Project Year 1 (June 30, 2015) from 28 percent to 33 percent; six percent by the end of Project Year 2 (June 30, 2016) from 33 percent to 39 percent; six percent by the end of Project Year 3 (June 30, 2017) from 39 percent to 45 percent. (2) Increase the percentage of students achieving proficiency at John Kennedy Elementary School: 16 percent by the end of Project Year 2 (June 30. 2016) from 25 percent to 41 percent; and, 16 percent by the end of Project Year 3 (June 30, 2017) from 41 percent to 57 percent. (3) Increase the percentage of students achieving proficiency at Dalton-Nunda Elementary School, Mt. Morris Elementary School, and York Elementary School 35 percent by the end of Project Year 3 (June 30, 2017) from 26 percent to 61 percent.

Library Media Specialists in districts served by the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership and the non-public schools located within its service area will also participate in professional development that partners schools with community resources, including: the Geneseo Migrant Outreach Center, imagineYOU, iCanCode, and Sustainable Intelligence.

Batavia Middle School will be the target as Phase I beginning in earnest upon commencement of the project period (December 1, 2015). Phase II will commence beginning Year 2 of the project period (July 1, 2016) and will target the other schools in the Batavia City School District. Phase III will commence beginning Year 3 of the project period (July 1, 2017) and will target all other schools served by the Genesee Valley Educational Partnership; specifically the three elementary schools that have Local Assistance Plans. All non-public schools will have access to the instructional technology kits and community resource partners, and three non-public schools will participate in the intensive, year-long, job-imbedded professional development using instructional technology kits to design, develop and facilitate collaborative projects with teachers.
