Learning Technology Grant Winner: Auburn Junior High School

Proposal Abstract

Grade Level Targeted: The project will focus on grade levels 6-12 and will have a primary focus on the Auburn Junior High School, a focus school. The project will also serve the Auburn High School; also a focus school, the Cayuga Centers School, and two private schools.

Activities: Auburn Junior High School will identify one technology integration mentor for both grade level teams for the 6th, 7th, and 8th grade for a total of six mentors. One of these mentors will be the school library media specialist. Each of the six technology integration mentors along with the schools staff developer will receive several sequenced trainings to include the Learning Technology Master Trainers course through the University of Rochester, Warner School of Education. Dr. David Miller; of the Warner School, will also provide two days of on-site mentorship each year to our technology integration mentors. Each mentor will provide mentorship on technology integration, to include project-based learning, flipped classrooms, and blended learning during regularly scheduled team meetings. Mentors will also work with each teacher on project to develop a technology integrated lesson. The staff developer will provide (unevaluated) observation and feedback to the teacher. Each Auburn Junior High School teacher will work with their team mentor to develop two projects a year.

Purpose/Objectives/Intended Results:

  • A district committee will develop a process for curriculum review in order to ensure quality alignment and implementation of curriculum to improve student achievement as evidenced by consistent use of district-wide curricular documents to include the integration of technology (Tenet 3.1) by June 2016.
  • 75% of teachers will use instructional strategies that motivate and engage all students in high-level cognitive activities that reflect instructional outcomes, 21st Century Skills, and are differentiated, as appropriate, for individual and diverse learners by June 2018 (Tenet 3.4).
  • Auburn Junior High School will increase student achievement in ELA by 10 percentage points and Math by 9 percentage points by June 2018.
  • At least 75% of teachers use available technological tools and communication strategies to engage each student. Teacher’s knowledge of 21st Century Skills is current and embedded in the communication strategies. Students contribute to the variety of technological strategies used to engage them in their own learning and become critical users of quality information (2011 NYSUIT Rubric 1.6) by June 2018.
  • At least 80% of teachers provide guidance to students to use technology, including the Internet, to produce writing as well as to interact and collaborate with others (NYS CCLS W.4.6.) by June 2018.
  • At least 80% of teachers facilitate students in integrating multiple sources of information presented in diverse formats and media in order to make informed decisions and solve problems, evaluate the credibility and accuracy of each source   and not discrepancies among data (NYS CCLS SL.11-12.2) by June 2018.
  • At least 80% of teachers can assist students to evaluate the advantages and advantages of using different mediums (NYS CCLS RI.8.7.) by June 2018.
  • At least 80% of teachers can help students make strategic use of digital media in lessons to enhance understanding of findings, reasoning, and evidence, and add interest (NYS CCLS SL.11-12.5) by June 2018.
  • At least 80% of teachers use lessons that contain effective technology integration that allow students to learn, practice, and demonstrate their level of technology skills by June 2018.
