Social Studies

The Board of Regents, at the April 29, 2014 meeting, adopted the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework as the foundation for social studies in New York State.  The Framework has been implemented in grade levels K-8, Global History and Geography I (Grade 9), Participation in Government (Grade 12), and Economics (Grade 12).  Students enrolled for the first time in Global History and Geography II may begin receiving instruction aligned to the framework in the 2018-2019 school year. Students enrolled for the first time in United States History and Government may begin instruction aligned to the framework in the 2019-2020 school year.   

The Resource Guide and Core Curriculum (1998) is an active document and may be used for course instruction until the end of the 2018-2019 school year for Global History and Geography II (Grade 10) and the end of the 2019-2020 school year for United States History and Government. Regents Examinations aligned to the 1998 Resource Guide and Core Curriculum will be available through June 2020 for Global History and Geography II and June 2021 for United States History and Government.

2018-2019 School Year

  • Students enrolled in Grades K-8, Global History and Geography I, Participation in Government, and Economics should receive instruction aligned to the NYS K-12 Social Studies Framework.
  • Students enrolled in Global History and Geography II may receive instruction aligned to the framework and take the Regents Examination in Global History and Geography II (New Framework) in June 2019.
  • Students enrolled in United States History and Government should receive instruction aligned to the Resource Guide and Core Curriculum and take the Regents Examination in United States History and Government in June 2019.

2019-2020 School Year

  • Students enrolled in Grades K-8, Global History and Geography I, Global History and Geography II, Participation in Government, and Economics should receive instruction aligned to the NYS K-12 Social Studies Framework.
  • Students enrolled in United States History and Government may receive instruction aligned to the New York State K-12 Social Studies Framework and take the Regents Examination in United States History and Government (New Framework) in June 2020.

New York State has five specific content areas for standards:

  • History of the United States and New York
  • World History
  • Geography
  • Economics
  • Civics, Citizenship, and Government
