English Language Arts & Literacy News

July 2018

Summer Reading:  The 2018 New York State summer reading program launched in June.  Did you know New York families can access thousands of books digitally this summer?  Read Commissioner Elia’s Parent Update(link is external) or visit the New York State Library’s website for more information.

Raising Awareness:  New York State educators are currently in the Raising Awareness phase of our transition to the Next Generation Learning Standards.  Thousands of educators began the process of raising awareness through their attendance at the Supporting All Students conferences in Saratoga, Rochester, and New York City.  Educators throughout the state embodied the Lifelong Practices of Readers and Writers as they enriched their knowledge of the standards through collaboration.  During the Raising Awareness phase, districts:

  • understand the adoption and implementation timeline of the Next Generation ELA and Mathematics Learning Standards.
  • understand the changes between the 2011 P-12 Learning Standards and the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • develop a P-12 plan for curriculum development and professional development aligned to the Next Generation Learning Standards.
  • support the development of summative assessments aligned to the Next Generation Learning Standards.

NYS Assessments:  75% of the questions from the 2018 Grades 3-8 English Language Arts Assessments were released by NYSED in early June.  Released 2018 3-8 State Test Questions and scoring materials are available at EngageNY.
